Background and Rationale

School of Medicine of MacKay Medical University has long upheld its educational mission of “carrying forward the MacKay spirit and cultivating tomorrow’s exemplary physicians.” Through this commitment, the School has educated numerous outstanding physicians who have earned widespread recognition from both the medical profession and society. However, with changes in population demographics and healthcare needs, future physicians will face increasingly complex challenges. They must not only possess the ability to master the latest medical knowledge and technologies, but also demonstrate excellence, adaptability, and innovation in diverse and evolving healthcare environments.

Mission

Establishing a Comprehensive Basic and Clinical Research System

The program aims to enhance the teaching and research capabilities of faculty members and encourage basic science and clinical faculty to form interdisciplinary research teams based on their areas of expertise. Through these collaborations, more advanced curricula and research initiatives can be developed. The School will work closely with the clinical departments of Mackay Memorial Hospital, leveraging hospital resources to support clinicians and healthcare professionals in developing disease research models. This partnership will promote the integration of basic and clinical research while enabling the sharing of research achievements and recognition.

Aligning with Institutional Development Priorities and Advancing Key Areas of Expertise

The University’s strategic areas of development include geriatric medicine, regenerative medicine, and precision medicine. In alignment with these priorities, the Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine will actively promote research and education in additional fields, including cardiovascular and preventive medicine, immunology and cancer medicine, and neuroscience and psychiatry. These efforts will further extend into applied medical disciplines such as pharmaceutical research, interventional therapies, stem cell research, gene and cell therapies, and studies of the brain, behavior, and psychology.

Cultivating Clinician-Scientists with Independent Research Competence

The program seeks to equip clinical physicians with competencies in basic laboratory techniques, critical appraisal of scientific literature, digital learning, and big data analysis. It aims to nurture medical professionals with innovative thinking, the ability to independently design and conduct research projects, and the international competitiveness necessary to contribute to the advancement of medicine and healthcare.
